VfL Wolfsburg have said goodbye to goalkeeper Marius Müller. The 33-year-old shot-stopper has joined Scottish Premiership side Aberdeen FC, the club announced on Thursday. Sporting director Lutz Pfannenstiel secured Müller’s services, with the Heppenheim native signing a deal of undisclosed length in Scotland.

What happened in Marius Müller’s move?

Müller spent two years at Wolfsburg, making just eight competitive appearances. He was mostly second-choice behind Kamil Grabara (27), who is also expected to leave the club. The move to Scotland came together quickly, Müller explained in a club statement. „It all happened very fast, but I’m excited to be in Scotland,“ he said.

The goalkeeper knew Pfannenstiel from their shared past and praised the swift talks. „Of course I know Lutz well, and when I spoke with him and goalkeeping coach Craig Hinchliffe about a move to Aberdeen, it sounded like an exciting opportunity,“ Müller added. He also exchanged views with Dennis Geiger (28), Aberdeen’s former Hoffenheim loanee, who only had good things to report about the Dons.

How did Wolfsburg react to the departure?

Pirmin Schwegler, Wolfsburg’s sporting director, spoke positively about Müller’s commitment. „From day one, Marius fully identified with VfL Wolfsburg,“ Schwegler said. „We openly discussed his current sporting perspective and jointly concluded that the move to Aberdeen is the right step for both parties.“

Schwegler thanked Müller for his efforts and wished him all the best for the future. The goalkeeper himself sounded emotional about leaving. „Saying goodbye is tough because I felt extremely comfortable both at the club and in the entire environment,“ he admitted. „After the relegation, I would have liked to help the team bounce back together.“

What does the move mean for both clubs?

For Aberdeen, Müller is a reinforcement between the posts. The Scottish side faces the 2024/25 Premiership season with ambitions to establish itself. Müller brings Bundesliga 2 experience and could step straight into a key role.

At VfL Wolfsburg, the search for a new goalkeeper is now in focus. Reports suggest Timon Wellenreuther (30) is a prime candidate. The former Feyenoord stopper, who last played in the Eredivisie, could fill the void left by Müller. The Wolves are thus facing an important decision ahead of the new season.
