VfL Wolfsburg has parted ways with captain Christian Eriksen after relegation. The Dane is set to return to Ajax Amsterdam. Eriksen played 24 Bundesliga games last season with 2 goals and 6 assists. His contract runs until 2027, but he is unlikely to stay in the second tier. A concrete path leads to Ajax Amsterdam, where Eriksen played 162 games between 2010 and 2013 and scored 32 goals. He had already publicly expressed his interest in returning to Ajax. Wolfsburg signed Eriksen in the summer of 2025 without a transfer fee, with ambitions to reach the European Cup. Instead, the team relegated, sealed by a 1-2 defeat in the relegation playoff against SC Paderborn. Wolfsburg is now facing a major squad overhaul. Patrick Wimmer is moving to TSG Hoffenheim for a transfer fee of 10 million euros. Buyers are also being sought for goalkeeper Kamil Grabara, striker Mohamed Amoura, and midfielder Lovro Majer. The club plans to raise around 100 million euros from player sales. Two planned arrivals are looking different. Goalkeeper Tjark Ernst and forward Fabian Reese had already given their consent for a move to Lower Saxony before relegation. Now, talks are underway to see if the Hertha duo will also take the step into the second tier. The transfer fee Wolfsburg will receive for Eriksen and whether Ajax will take the next step to a transfer will become clear in the coming weeks.
