VfL Wolfsburg announced on July 5 2026 that Swiss forward Alessio Besio has joined from SC Freiburg for €700,000, while US international Kevin Paredes leaves on a free transfer to FC Utrecht. The moves are the latest pieces in the VW club’s costly rebuilding plan.

Who is arriving and why?

Besio, 22, returns after a loan spell at SV Verl and signs a contract until summer 2030. Coach Tobias Strobl, who previously worked with him at Verl, called him a wanted player. "Our time together in Verl was very successful, so I’m glad we can keep working together," Besio said. The young striker is expected to inject fresh dynamism into an attack that has struggled since relegation.

Who is leaving and what does it mean?

Kevin Paredes, 23, with three caps for the US, did not extend his contract and moves free to FC Utrecht for one year with an option for two more. "I was thrilled when Utrecht showed interest," Paredes explained. For Wolfsburg it means another winger departs without compensation, freeing budget for further signings.

What is Wolfsburg’s current situation?

The club sits 16th in the Bundesliga after 34 matches, holding 29 points (7 wins, 8 draws, 19 losses) with a recent form of LDWLD. This season they have scored 45 goals and conceded 69, a –24 goal difference. The latest result was a 2‑1 defeat to SC Paderborn on May 25 2026. They trail league leaders Bayern Munich by 60 points.

What lies ahead?

With Besio added and Paredes gone, the front line must be reshaped. Director of sport Pirmin Schwegler and head coach Dieter Hecking hope the Swiss youngster will immediately pressure defenses. At the same time, the club faces the question of whether more funds will be allocated for an experienced striker to help escape the relegation battle.
