VfL Wolfsburg has strongly condemned hate comments and threats against its player Joakim Maehle after the bitter defeat in the relegation playoff. The 29-year-old was insulted and even received threats after his early red card in the relegation playoff against SC Paderborn.

What happened?

Maehle received a red card in the 14th minute of the game, which ended 1:2 in extra time. At that point, Wolfsburg was leading 1:0.

Why is it important for VfL Wolfsburg?

Our relegation is not the responsibility of one player. It is the result of a disappointing season in which we as a club were not good enough over several months. We all share the responsibility for this, wrote the club.

How does the club react?

Maehle gave everything for VfL Wolfsburg in the past season. Anyone who saw him in the stadium's catacombs on Monday knows what guilt this player already carries, it was said. But mistakes are part of football. Personal attacks and threats, however, must never be part of it. We stand behind Joakim and his family and strongly condemn any form of hate and threats.
