VfL Wolfsburg have completed the signing of goalkeeper Timon Wellenreuther from Feyenoord Rotterdam. The 30-year-old has put pen to paper on a deal running until 30 June 2029 – just weeks after the club’s relegation from the Bundesliga.

What happened?

The move for the experienced shot-stopper is now official. Wellenreuther, who most recently captained Feyenoord, returns to German football after nine years abroad. VfL Wolfsburg currently sit top of the 2. Bundesliga with zero points on the board – their first fixture of the season is away to SV Darmstadt 98 on 27 February 2027.

Sport director Pirmin Schwegler cited Wellenreuther’s European pedigree: “He has played in the Champions League and Europa League, won multiple titles with Feyenoord and recently took on captaincy.” The goalkeeper brings both quality and leadership to the Wolves.

Why this matters for VfL Wolfsburg

By signing Wellenreuther, VfL Wolfsburg land a goalkeeper who made his professional debut at Schalke 04 aged just 18. His career has since taken in spells at Karlsruher SC, Willem II Tilburg and RSC Anderlecht before becoming first-choice at Feyenoord. The return to German football is “a special step” for him, as Wellenreuther put it.

The squad overhaul is in full swing: Marius Müller left for Scottish side Aberdeen after two years in Wolfsburg, and Kamil Grabara is also set to depart. Wellenreuther is the next marquee arrival – a clear statement ahead of the club’s second-tier campaign.

Pre-season preparations are now in full swing. Wellenreuther will integrate quickly as Wolfsburg continue to reshape the squad. Their first competitive outing comes on 27 February 2027 at SV Darmstadt 98 – a tie already generating plenty of chatter.
