VfL Wolfsburg have lost a second goalkeeper ahead of the 2. Bundesliga season. Marius Müller, 33, is joining Scottish giants FC Aberdeen after two years with the Wolves. The club confirmed the move on 17 July 2026. Wolfsburg, currently 16th in the Bundesliga with 29 points from 34 games (7 wins, 8 draws, 19 losses), are in the midst of a major squad overhaul.

What happened?

Müller leaves Wolfsburg after two seasons, following Kamil Grabara out the exit door. The 33-year-old had previously played for Schalke 04, FC Luzern, RB Leipzig and 1. FC Kaiserslautern. In comes Timon Wellenreuther, 30, who spent the last nine years in the Netherlands and Belgium with Feyenoord Rotterdam, Willem II Tilburg and RSC Anderlecht. Wolfsburg are banking on the experienced shot-stopper to steady the ship in the second tier.

Why does the switch matter?

Müller’s departure is the 11th exit since the drop from the Bundesliga. Six new faces have arrived so far, including Robert Glatzel from Hamburger SV and Fabian Reese from Hertha BSC. The reshuffle underscores the scale of the rebuild. With 45 goals scored and 69 conceded (-24), and a recent run of one win, one draw and one loss, there’s little margin for error.
