VfL Wolfsburg have loaned out controversial forward Mohamed Amoura to French Ligue 1 side OGC Nice. The 26-year-old leaves the 2. Bundesliga club after a turbulent spell marked by injury issues and a notable training-ground incident.
Meanwhile, coach Niko Kovač's team has started the 2026/27 season strongly, sitting third in the 2. Bundesliga with seven points from three games. They have scored six goals and conceded only two, giving them a goal difference of plus four. In the title race, VfL are just two points behind leaders 1. FC Nürnberg. The next challenge is a home match against 1. FC Magdeburg, currently fifth, on 5 December 2026.
Mohamed Amoura joined Wolfsburg in the summer of 2024 for approximately €17 million from Belgian club Union Saint-Gilloise. His contract ran until 2029 and applied to the 2. Bundesliga. In 67 appearances for VfL, he was involved in 34 goals, scoring eight times in 33 matches last season. His time at the club, however, was overshadowed by recurring thigh problems and a lack of full fitness.
The most defining incident occurred at the end of April 2025, when Amoura was involved in a physical altercation during a training session. He was subsequently suspended for the following match against 1. FC Köln, which ended in a 0-1 defeat. The suspension followed allegations he had faked an injury in training. This series of problems ultimately led to his departure.
Alongside Amoura, two other experienced players left VfL Wolfsburg during this transfer period. Thirty-year-old defender Denis Vavro moved permanently to Viktoria Pilsen. Goalkeeper Kamil Grabara, 27, was loaned to Juventus Turin with an option to buy. These personnel changes require adjustments to the squad, which you can examine in detail on our squad page.
Amoura's departure represents a financial and sporting shift. Former manager Peter Christiansen, now 51, reportedly rejected offers exceeding €30 million for the striker in the past. His current market value is estimated at €20 million. The loan to Nice includes a purchase clause, which would secure VfL a further transfer fee should the move become permanent.
With Amoura's exit, the pressure increases on the remaining attacking players. Fabian Reese (28) and 32-year-old Robert Glatzel must now provide even more goal threat. The current league position and the strong record of six goals in three games show the team is already well-equipped in attack. Detailed statistics on this are available on our stats page.
The sporting management at VfL Wolfsburg has sent a clear message by allowing Amoura to leave. They are prioritising team spirit and reliability over the individual talent of a player who repeatedly attracted attention for disciplinary issues. The focus is now fully on the team, which has established itself in the upper reaches of the 2. Bundesliga. The current standings table confirms this strong position. The next home game against Magdeburg on 5 December offers a chance to continue the positive run.
