FC Schalke 04 have reportedly identified VfL Wolfsburg forward Mohamed Amoura as a potential transfer target. The newly-promoted Bundesliga side are said to be interested in a loan deal for the 26-year-old Algerian international, who is currently recovering from a thigh injury.
Amoura himself is understood to want to continue playing top-flight football following Wolfsburg's relegation. His contract with the Wolves runs until the summer of 2029, making a permanent transfer financially challenging for Schalke. A loan deal with potential salary contributions from Wolfsburg is therefore considered the most likely scenario.
Financial hurdles for Royal Blues
The biggest obstacle for Schalke is the financial framework. Mohamed Amoura earns approximately five million euros per season at VfL Wolfsburg. The promoted club, which is under financial pressure itself and needs to sell players, might hope for Wolfsburg to cover part of the costs. At the same time, there is strong competition for the attacker from Olympique Marseille and other clubs in France and Italy.
Sportingly, Amoura would be a high-calibre option for Schalke. In 61 Bundesliga appearances for Wolfsburg, he registered 34 goal contributions. After ten goals and twelve assists in his debut 2024/25 season, he added eight goals and four assists in the 2025/26 campaign, though he lost his starting spot in the final run-in.
Schalke's attack has already seen movement. Junior Adamu arrived as a new signing, while Edin Dzeko extended his contract. With Moussa Sylla potentially still leaving the club, another offensive reinforcement remains conceivable. For Schalke's sporting director Frank Baumann, securing Amoura would be a notable coup shortly before the transfer deadline.
The Algerian striker is one of several players in VfL Wolfsburg's squad whose future must be decided following relegation. Planning for the new season in the 2. Bundesliga is already underway.
