VfL Wolfsburg is set to sell Aster Vranckx to FC Southampton for around €5 million. The Belgian international joined Wolfsburg in 2021 for €8 million from Mechelen and has scored two goals in 70 competitive appearances for the Wolves.
A move for the 23-year-old midfielder would bring VfL Wolfsburg approximately €5 million in transfer fees. Vranckx still has a contract running until 2029 and has previously been loaned out to AC Milan and US Sassuolo. Southampton is coached by German Tonda Eckert, who made headlines due to training spy allegations against Middlesbrough and subsequently received death threats.
Sporting director Dieter Hecking and head coach Tobias Strobl are working to reduce the bloated squad. Besides Vranckx, central defenders Moritz Jenz and Denis Vavro have indicated their desire to leave the club and are currently excluded from team training. Brazilian defender Cleiton Santana dos Santos could also depart after only nine months at the club without making a competitive appearance.
After two matches, the team has accumulated 4 points and sits in 4th place, two points behind league leaders 1. FC Nürnberg. The record stands at 1 win, 1 draw, 0 losses with a goal difference of +1 (1 goal scored, 0 conceded). The next fixture is an away match against Karlsruher SC on August 29th.
The club has already generated around €70 million in transfer revenue this summer, including sales of Dzenan Pejcinovic (€25m to Stuttgart), Konstantinos Koulierakis (€16.5m to Roma) and Patrick Wimmer (€10m to Hoffenheim). Approximately €30 million has been reinvested in new players, including €8 million for Fabian Reese from Hertha BSC. Hecking aims to offload additional salaries before the transfer deadline, following the loan of Kamil Grabara to Juventus Turin.
The current situation shows VfL Wolfsburg off to a solid start in the season. With their present position and form, the team should remain in contention for promotion spots. Upcoming fixtures, including the away game at Karlsruher SC, will be key in shaping the campaign.
