VfL Wolfsburg ended their long wait for a home win with a commanding 5-1 victory over SV Darmstadt 98. The result at the Volkswagen Arena in front of 18,345 spectators provides a major boost for the club's promotion hopes in the 2. Bundesliga.

Alexander Bernhardsson opened the scoring in the 14th minute, finishing off a nice piece of play from Fabian Reese. Darmstadt equalised through Milan Smit (28th) following an error by Joakim Maehle, but Robert Glatzel turned the game around before half-time to make it 2-1 (40th).

Doubles seal the deal

Wolfsburg put the game to bed in the second half. Bernhardsson netted his second, again assisted by Reese, for 3-1 (61st). Shortly afterwards, another expensive summer signing, Muhammed Damar, made it 4-1 (67th). Glatzel put the finishing touch with his second goal of the night (79th). The striker now has four goals in five appearances this season, leading the team's scoring charts.

The last home win came on 14 January 2025 against FC St. Pauli. Since then, there had been just four wins in 38 league games at the Volkswagen Arena. This 5-1 thrashing of Darmstadt on 18 September was a clear statement. The team under manager Florian Kohfeldt responded well to the 1-0 defeat at St. Pauli the previous week.

With 11 points from six games, Wolfsburg sit fourth in the table. Their recent form shows two wins and two draws from the last five matches. The goal difference improved to +7. Attention now turns to the next fixture on 10 October away at second-placed 1. FC Nürnberg. The full schedule for the run-in is on our fixtures page.
